  • The first Lowes store opens, in North Carolina.
  • The U.S. is in its 2nd year of national alcohol prohibition.
  • Iowa becomes the first state to impose a cigarette tax.
  • Adolf Hitler becomes chair of the Nazi Party.
  • William Howard Taft is sworn in as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the only person to be President and Chief Justice.
  • The Tulsa Race Massacre occurs in Tulsa, OK.
  • The Irish Republic is created, and the Irish War of Independence begins, pitting Catholic versus Protestant Ireland.
  • Torrential rain in Texas left 5 to 9 feet of rain standing in San Antonio. Hundreds of people died. Rain totals varied from 24 to 36 inches in 35 hours.
