TEXAS STATE FINE ARTS AND COMMUNICATION PROVIDES FOCUS FOR ROTARY PROGRAM ON MAY 21
Sarah Maines and Virginia “Vee” Volpe speak to the Rotary Club of San Marcos on May 21 about Fine Arts and Communication at Texas State University. Maines will discuss programs in the College of Fine Arts and Communication, and Volpe will address the Friends organization that supports arts and communication at the University.
Sarah Maines is the Director of the 25th Best Drama Program in the world, otherwise known as The School of Theatre, Dance, and Film at Texas State University. She arrived at Texas State in 2010 as a professor of theatrical lighting design eager to have a hand in building a graduate program and performing arts center. She took the department reigns in 2020; an exciting time for live entertainment. Before joining Texas State, she ran the lighting design graduate program at Florida State University, served as Associate Lighting Designer for several commercial productions including the first national tour of In the Heights, the Broadway and NY City Center runs of Gypsy starring Patti Lupone, and 11 national and international companies of Jersey Boys. She continues to design at ZACH Theatre in Austin where she lives with her husband and two amazing teenagers.
Virginia Volpe is a West Texan, but don’t hold that against her. During her career, she has been a Peace Corps Volunteer (Sri Lanka) an Institutional Banker, and Global Head of Relationship Management (both NYC). She retired in 2019, had a go in Italy, but decided to come back home in 2021. Loving San Marcos, she’s very active with The San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance and Kissing Tree, where she is on the Board of the KT Hill Huggers Run Club and KT KaracTers Drama Club. She is now also President Elect for Friends of the Fine Arts and Communication at Texas State.
Rotary meets Wednesdays at noon at the VFW Hall, 1701 Hunter Rd., San Marcos. Visitors are always welcome at meetings.
